For those who suffer with headaches they can be a real pain, at times a living nightmare. They can prevent us going to work, socialising, joining in with life. When we are struck down by a headache, bright light becomes our enemy, and we can feel that all we need to do is to retreat to a dark room. If we are able to try and carry on with life a pair of dark shades can be our only comfort.
Suffering from headaches can take away our general sense of well being and this can reduce our motivation to look after our bodies in other ways. If we neglect our diet and our exercise pattern then our health can really suffer. We can become stuck in a vicious cycle.
If you are feeling stressed then you are much more likely to suffer from a headache. Any sort of stress or anxiety can trigger a headache, it might be worry about attending a social event, it might be an important day at work, it might be worry about worrying! Some of us can worry about anything. What ever situation stresses you out you probably think the worst thing that could happen would be a headache, it would ruin everything. When you start to worry about getting a headache you are almost sure to bring one on!
So if you can lean to relax and stop worrying about getting a headache it will do wonders for your health. The best start is to learn to relax your body. If you can do this then your mind will follow suit. You will reduce the tension that you hold in your body and most significantly in your head. Meditation and mindfulness are the perfect tools for the job.
To get started try this simple relaxation exercise…
Sit upright in a chair and close your eyes. Put all of your attention on your head and think about relaxing your head. Notice your body relax more with every out breath. Then move to your neck and shoulders and do the same. Then your arms and hands, then your torso, pelvic region, legs and finally your feet. Continue sitting and listen to your body breath, continuing to notice that relaxation that takes place on your out breaths.
Do this exercise when you feel your body tensing up and your mind becoming hectic and you might just zap that headache before it takes hold. Come on a Revitalise Day to learn some great techniques for relaxing the mind and body and learn to release tension pains the natural way.
