Recently I have started doing shift work. I am still a lawyer but I am giving telephone advice overnight.
In terms of looking after my well being this is a new challenge. I am very aware that shift work can cause health problems and that is the last thing I want. Rather than feeling negative about this I am loving the additional motivation to keep an eye on my lifestyle.
Because I have MS my health is always at the top of my priority list. I don’t want to undo all the good work I have done looking after myself over the last few years since diagnosis. So now more than ever I am making sure that I am doing all the right things.
In my old routine I used to run before work. After a good nights sleep this used to work for me. Yesterday I woke early having had only a couple of hours sleep. My shift finished at 5am and I was up at 7 with Noah to get him ready for school!
Rather than going for a run, which I knew would push my tired body, I suggested to my Mum that we went for a walk with the dog.
We headed off down the canal path and went for a drink a couple of miles later. The gentle exercise was just what my body needed and it was great for my mind too.
After a hard night of work the fresh air and the autumn colours really were like mindful therapy. It was so easy to be present in the moment because it was calling for me to appreciate the beauty and it was so enjoyable.
I kept my love of running in perspective, there is always another day – a day when I have had a good nights sleep!
Listening to our mind and body is something we have to learn to do. My diagnosis with MS gave me just the motivation I needed to do this. I find that Mindfulness is a great way to help me to achieve a good balance.
If you struggle to get your life in balance then come on a Revitalise session. Training yourself in awareness is a great place to start.
