Last night Martyn came in and woke me up after he arrived home from the pub. I was fast asleep. He came to get ready for bed and made a big fuss over looking for the mirror that he uses for his contact lenses. It seemed to go on forever! I was a bit annoyed really because I had a Revitalise Day today and I wanted to get a good nights sleep so I could be on top form.
To make things a little worse Noah then started crying at 5am. He wasn’t feeling great so I gave him some medicine and then got back into bed. 5 minutes later I heard him plodding into our room and then he jumped on the bed. Martyn made a swift exit for the spare bed and I was left with a wriggling 3 year old tossing and turning and asking for breakfast. Great.
Once I had made the decision to get up and get on with the day I felt good despite the lack of sleep. Noah and I went and fed and the horses, then we made fairy cakes, did a short meditation together and then had breakfast. Then I got ready for leading the day retreat. Phew.
It got me thinking about expectations and how they can result in us over dramatising everything.
It would have been really easy to worry about my lack of sleep when I had such a full on day ahead of me. The day retreats are massively relaxing, but despite this, leading the day takes plenty of energy.
At 5 am accepting that Noah was wide awake seemed difficult but looking back it was the best thing to do. He really wanted to get up. He is too young to tell the time and his body clock was telling him to get moving. Fighting this was futile.
As it turned out we had a lovely morning together, before the rest of the world got up. I loved every minute of it. It would have been very easy to jump to the conclusion that my broken nights sleep was a disaster. Actually living in the moment meant that it wasn’t such a big deal at all. A good dose of meditation and I felt fine. The day was a huge success and I felt on top form.
When things don’t go quite the way you planned living in the moment and dealing with the situation as it unfolds is the best that you can do. If you are mindful you can do this in a calm and considered way rather than allowing your world to become clouded by chaos. Come on a Revitalise Day to get the skills you need to see things clearly, what ever happens in your world.
