Today I was talking to my friend, Christie, who is a nurse. We were talking about giving injections to patients and what a skill it is to do it properly.
She told me that a really useful trick is to tell patients to wiggle their toes whilst they have the injection.
At first I thought there must be a medical reason for this but then she explained the real reason behind it…
By taking the attention of the patient to the act of wiggling their toes their attention is taken away from the sensation of the injection. By focusing on a different body part they also relax and so the injection hurts less.
This is such a mindful tool, so simple and a great example of how mindfulness can help in everyday life.
