Last night I went to the Walton Women’s Institute meeting to deliver a taster session on mindfulness and meditation.
Some of the ladies already meditated and were keen to do more, for others it was new and they were really open to it which was great. For everyone the chance to sit and relax was a brilliant break from everyday life.
The meeting had a really lovely feel. It struck me how so many of the principals of mindful living were already very present in the work of the group…
1) Their generosity was really clear. I ran my session return for a charitable donation and they were totally on board with this. They were talking about raising money in inventive ways such as jewellery donations. They were all about giving to good causes. Thinking about others by donating what you can is a great route to happiness, being generous creates positive feelings.
2) They were all about fun, there were lots of jokes cracked and giggling which provided light relief. As adults life can become very serious, having a group of friends to share some good times with can help us to see things in perspective. Mindfulness teaches us that whatever is going on in life there are always some positives to be found.
3) They were kind. Everyone seemed pleased for me to be there and made an effort to talk to me and include me in conversations. As a result I loved it and had a great time and I think they did too. Showing kindness to others really works, people react well and everyone feels good.
4) They were interested, asked questions and listened to the answers. Being interested is a really good way to be present in the moment. When you have an inquiring mind your attention doesn’t drift and you get more out of every experience.
So everywhere we go we can learn, WI meetings included. I helped them with meditation techniques and Walton WI showed me lots of mindful living in practise! Perfect.
If you would like to learn some more meditation techniques book on to a Revitalise Session. You will be amazed at the impact that a short session each day can make to how much you enjoy life.
