One of the things I love most about being mindful is the opportunity that it gives you to see the comedy in life. Even in the most difficult of times there is always something to smile about.
A technique I find great is to think of your life like a film. Your thoughts are the characters. So for example…
In my film Miss Busy Body shows up quite often with her clip board, planning, checking the time, nagging a little to keep things moving.
Another regular is Miss Anxiety. She normally shows up in the morning and hangs around, not making any particular point but just changing things by being present.
Miss Compulsive turns up every now and then getting over excited and making snap decisions when perhaps it would be better to take some time over them. Her sister Miss Regret then usually appears to take over where she left off.
I could go on, but you get the idea?
Once you name the characters in your film you start to release their grip on you. You see them for what they are and rather than being affected by them you have the option to say hello and let them move on.
So in the morning as I sit to meditate and I notice that Miss Anxiety is sitting with me I say good morning to her. Just by saying hi, her impact lifts. I smile because it amuses me and everything seems better. I feel better.
Give this a go, it really is amazing that just acknowledging the characters means that their impact eases.
