As human beings we have about 70,000 thoughts a day. AMAZING! And perhaps TERRIFYING!
If you crave a bit more space in your mind then this exercise could be for you.
This exercise works against obvious logic. Rather than seeking to avoid thoughts through fighting them or through distraction we actually do the opposite. The focus is very much on the mind and we look for the thoughts!
The first stage is to get you in the zone – focussed and calm. The second stage is where you find some space.
Sit up with your back nice and straight so that your mind is focussed and alert.
Take a few beep breaths.
Let your breathing return to normal but keep your focus there.
Detect the rising and falling sensation that comes into your body with your breath.
See where you feel this strongest.
If your mind wanders away then simply bring it back when you notice.
When your mind feels as though it has been able to hover on your breathing for a while then take your attention to your head.
Hold the whole of your head in your attention and look for any thoughts that pop in.
When you notice one then come back to holding the whole of your head in your attention.
Look for the next thought.
Keep this pattern going.
When your mind starts to feel tired then give it some time off and let it go wherever it wants for a couple of minutes before you finish.
Did you find some space between the thoughts? Did the thoughts disappear when you wanted to find them? Get in touch on the contact form and tell me how it worked for you!
