The “Yes’ technique is a Meditation and Mindfulness technique that I LOVE. It is really simple but it works so well.
The essence of the exercise is that you say Yes to yourself each time you become aware of a thought in your mind, a feeling in your body or any other sort of distraction. By saying Yes you acknowledge whatever it is and you also accept it.
You can do this in real life as well as in Meditation. In Meditation the impact is amazing because you have a heightened level of awareness given the stillness that you create.
You can say the Yes out loud if you like or you can just say it to yourself. Do whichever feels more comfortable to you.
So here are some examples of the things you might say yes to…
My eyes feel tired – Yes.
An ache in my shoulder – Yes.
I can hear the dustbin lorry – Yes.
Tension – Yes.
Warmth – Yes.
Soon you may start to notice positive things to say Yes to…
Calm – Yes.
Content – Yes.
Rested – Yes.
Happy – Yes.
After a short while you will probably find yourself scanning your body for something else to say Yes to – then you can say scanning – Yes!
If doubt creeps in as to whether you are doing the technique right then say Doubt – Yes.
Some things may feel more difficult to say Yes to. The technique really requires us to be honest with ourselves. There may be some things that you don’t want to accept – over time you will feel more able.
So it really is simple but it makes you totally aware and you start to accept how things are in that moment. It also really highlights that thoughts and feelings don’t last. They come and go all the time.
