Being Mindful is so much more than sitting to meditate. Everything that you do every day can be done mindfully, it is simply a case of finding a way to be present in the moment. When we are present in the moment our body and minds relax.
Today I was putting on some of my lovely new hand cream. My friend Cath, of Big Calm Aromatherapy, bought it for me. She uses the most amazing products in her aromatherapy massages so I knew it would smell and feel amazing, and it does!
Turning the little things we do without thinking into mindfulness exercises is a great way to fit some brain training and relaxation into your everyday life. Learning to focus on what we are doing in that moment is at the heart of mindfulness. No matter who you are and how busy you are spending a minute applying some hand cream mindfully must be possible.
If you have difficulty getting to sleep at night this sort of exercise is perfect for slowing your mind down. Many of us rush around until the very last moment, determined to get everything sorted for the next day before our heads hit the pillow. This sort of approach to bed time rarely leads to a good start to our nights sleep. The best way to prepare for sleep is to wind down gradually.
So get all of your jobs out of the way and then try this, see what a difference it makes for you…
Sit on the end of your bed and take a few deep breaths.
Take some hand cream and put a generous amount on the palm of one hand.
Notice the cool sensation of the cream touching your palm and take another deep breath.
Next close your hands together so that you bread the cream across the inside of each hand. Do this slowly so that you really feel the cool cream spread over your skin, nourishing it as it does.
Now use the cream that coats the inside of your palms to rub slowly into the back of your hands and between your fingers. Again really notice the sensations as you do this.
Continue with smooth slow motions until the cream is fully absorbed by your hands.
Bring your hands up to your nose and take a few more deep breaths to enjoy the fragrance of the cream.
Now move into your seeping position and appreciate the sense of calm and still you feel as a result of this exercise.
Continue to focus on your breathing as you lie with your eyes closed. Notice where you feel the breath in the body and watch each breath from the moment it enters your body to the moment it leaves.
As with all meditation exercises don’t beat yourself up if your mind wanders. Simply notice the thought that your mind has gone to and then return to the exercise.
The first few times you try this you may find your mind wandering repeatedly. Keep having a go and after a few nights your body and mind will get used to this new routine and be ready for sleep by the time it comes.
