As part of World Mental Health Awareness week, I ran a Mindfulness session at a local Sure Start centre today.
It got me thinking about how having a new baby changes everything. From the big things, like the time you have to yourself. To the small things, like what you keep in your bathroom!
With all that change going on around us it can feel like we loose control of our own lives, things can seem hectic and time can fly without us really valuing our time with our little one.
Mindfulness and Meditation can provide the perfect ‘fix’ to allow us to come back to being ourselves and to enjoying our baby.
Sitting to Meditate does not need to be a huge time commitment, just 2 minutes a day is enough to make a difference.
Being with your baby when you meditate means that you don’t need to miss out on time with your little one. On the contrary, the 2 minutes you set aside to meditate can be your quality time together!
So chose a time when your baby is well fed, content and happy to chill out. Be flexible about when this happens to avoid frustration. Set a timer for 2 minutes.
Lie your baby down close to you. This can be on your lap facing you if you are sitting on a sofa and your baby is still small enough.
If you prefer to sit on the floor then you could sit cross legged or back on your heels with your legs bent beneath you. Put your baby on a play mat or soft blanket in front of you. Stay close so that your baby feels secure.
If it helps to keep your baby content you could put your hands on them so that there is physical contact too.
With a soft gaze take your focus to your baby’s eyes.
Each time your mind wanders take your focus back to your babies eyes.
When the timer finishes be pleased that you managed to stay with the exercise for the time you set aside. By taking the positive action of setting the timer you increase your chances of continuing to focus on your baby rather than being drawn away by other distractions.
Spending time like this will help you and your little one to be calm and connected, every time you do it!
