Brown Rice Spaghetti was on our shopping list yesterday. Noah and I went to the huge Sainsbury’s that stocks a million varieties of everything you could possibly want. We got plenty of it so that we don’t have to repeat the trip too often. We absolutely love it so our supplies run low quite easily!
As always it got me thinking about the mindful connections…
We had our nephew and niece to stay this weekend. We had a lovely time and they always know I am a soft touch for arranging a midnight feast!
They also love to ask me about my meditation. So this morning I gave them a little taster. My nephew is 7 and he settled down to have a go. He sat cross legged and to start with his back was very rounded. It was at that point that spaghetti came in useful. ‘Think about uncooked spaghetti’ I told him. ‘Try and make your back that straight’. It instantly worked. The trouble was he was then too tense! So I said ‘now imagine the spaghetti is cooked and you are letting it dangle from your fingers’ – then he really got it. Straight but relaxed. Perfect.
So, the other thing I think is great about spaghetti is that it is made for mindful eating. It takes time to learn how to eat it nicely and even once you have mastered that it takes a fair amount of concentration to wrap it round your fork and get it neatly into your mouth. It is one thing that demands that you eat it slowly. Again, perfect.
When we eat slowly we are much more likely to recognise when we are full and much less likely to over eat. If you are trying to cut down the amount you eat to loose a few pounds then this can be a great way to buy your pasta. It is also whole grain so it will keep you fuller for longer and as an insoluble fibre it will get your digestive system working well. Top marks all round.
So meditate with good posture, think straight and a make mindful choice about the sort of pasta you buy next time you are shopping. Making this small change could make a big difference.
