My husband Martyn is busy planting at the moment. We have courgette plants on the bathroom window sill, spinach and kale on the bedroom window sills and the garden is getting more and more exciting.
I have taken more interest than usual this year because the seeds are growing somewhere I notice them often. The courgette plants are the most amazing, they grow so much every day and I just can not believe how much bigger they get so quickly.
Martyn has really got the gardening bug, he can spend hours in the garden doing jobs. So despite being really busy with work and cricket he still finds time and he still learns new green fingered tricks all the time.
In life we need to keep interested to be happy. The moment we find ourselves bored we loose focus and things start to go downhill. Having something in our lives that we are truly inquisitive about is so valuable. When we are curious and interested we focus to a much greater level.
You may experience this when you watch a good film, you experience that sensation of watching it so closely, not looking away from the screen for a minute because you don’t want to miss anything.
If you can learn to transfer this skill to other areas of your life it can really pay great dividends. I Have noticed the benefits in my life.
In my work as a lawyer I make much better legal decisions when I am truly interested in the case. By remembering this I cut out all of my concerns about the time pressure I am under and I just get down to business, really understanding the situation I am faced with. The interest motivates me and as a consequence I work more productively and the time situation resolves itself. Magic.
When I run and I am genuinely interested I am so much stronger and faster and I get a much better work out. I notice the length of my stride and seemingly with no extra effort I feel I am charging along. I finish more sweaty, more out of breath and with a real sense of well being. Magic.
When I am truly interested in my little boy Noah and what he is doing we have a great time together. Recently he has been mastering rising trot on our pony Ladybird and this has had us both so keen to go out so he can practise his riding. At the moment we are often out twice a day and the results are amazing, he has progressed so much in just a couple of weeks. Again…Magic!
So get engrossed in something you do. It may be something you have done for a long time and it just needs an injection of interest. It might be something new that you want to add to your life. Just an awareness of the difference that real interest makes can transform our performance. Give it a go and see where it gets you.
