Last night I worked a late shift, 10pm – 7am. This shift always pushes me. Catching up on sleep is difficult because when the sun is up at 7 it seems wrong to go to bed!
But this morning I did it and I did it well.
I have been thinking a lot about the art of getting to seep, especially since I started working night shifts last year.
I have realised that it really is a bit of an art. You can’t force it, you can just set the circumstances up so that you have the best possible chance.
The tricky thing is not putting pressure on yourself to sleep. If you do this you tense up and then you are not in the right state to drop off.
I read once that it doesn’t matter if you are actually asleep. Just by lying down you are resting your body. Along side this Meditation gives me the tools to rest my mind.
Just by recognising that I am resting my body and my mind when I am lying in bed I remove that pressure to fall asleep.
So I take my focus to my breath and in doing so meditate, this stills my mind. If my mind wanders (which is completely normal) I tell myself ‘don’t worry, you are resting’. Then I take my focus back to my breath.
It totally works. Give it a try. Before you know it you will have had a lovely sleep.
