I have a computer based desk job as a lawyer as well as teaching mindfulness. I often blog about how much better I perform at work because of my mindful awareness. I have strong personal experience of it really improving my concentration, focus and decision making skills.
There remains no doubt in my mind that office based workers benefit massively from meditating and from being more mindful.
My sister is a civil engineer. I saw this picture of her at at work and it got me thinking about the impact that mindfulness could have in work situations outside of the office, where safety is often a high priority.
When safety is a concern workers need to be switched on, alert and focussed. The decisions they make often have a practical risk associated to them so they need to be right! The last thing they need is to be distracted by worries and anxieties.
When we feel stressed we pay less attention to the things that matter, we panic and get things out of perspective. This is when mistakes are made.
If you want to be more switched on and more chilled out Mindfulness is for you.
By training your brain you really can learn to focus and concentrate more fully, this has been shown through scientific research using MRI scanning.
Try doing this exercise everyday for a week and you will notice the difference in yourself…
Set a timer for 5 minutes.
Sit up straight and close your eyes.
Feel the rise and fall of your breath.
Don’t alter the breath, just watch it.
Each time a thought pops into your mind label it ‘thought’ or ‘feeling’. Then refocus on the breath and wait for the next thought and label it in exactly the same way.
When your timer goes off just take a moment to appreciate how you feel after stopping and sitting for just 5 minutes. If you could build up to 10 minutes you might feel twice as good!
By labelling the thought or feeling your are acknowledging it which is a really healthy way to deal with it. Trying to push thoughts and feelings away never works, they just come back with a vengeance and this is even more frustrating!
By looking for the thoughts whilst keeping an awareness on your breath you are building up your ability to remain focussed and concentrated.
If your workplace could benefit from more focus and concentration why not organise a Revitalise Course to help everyone on their way? You will be amazed at the benefits that are apparent in a very short space of time.
