Today I ran a mindfulness session for a local workplace. It got me thinking about what a huge difference mindfulness makes amongst colleagues and to the general office mood.
Anyone who works in an office will know that at times it can be full of people snapping at each other because they are stressed. Sometimes we take our frustration out on each other, when we have too much work to do tempers can fray. At times people get fed up with problems arising and the mood of the whole office can suffer.
All of these types of ill feeling create an environment that is not pleasant to be in and that is not productive. Sometimes though, try as we might, it can seem impossible to change things for the better.
People have asked me whether taking time to meditate each day might be selfish. Why on each should we give ourselves the luxury of time just for us when there is so much work to do?
Well, if you give yourself just 10 minutes in the morning, or some time on your lunch break, to be mindful, then the chances are that work for you will be transformed. You don’t need to do anything complicated, simply sit in a chair with a straight back, take a few deep breaths and then focus on observing your breathing for a while. Your body and mind will both get a well needed and revitalising break.
Afterwards you will be more patient with your colleagues. You will be more understanding of what others are going through. You will get some perspective on the situation rather than feeling bogged down and in a tiz. You will focus better and feel more satisfied with your efforts as a result. You might even enjoy work a whole lot more.
So you can’t demand that your colleagues change their ways but if you change yours then you will start to see the domino effect. As you develop your ability to be friendly and calm with others, after time, they will mirror this. As you do acts of kindness your colleagues will reciprocate. As you have more patience with those around you, your mind will feel lovely and calm and life will seem a little lighter.
Just by taking some time to be yourself, to breathe deeply and to relax you will finish your day with more energy and in much better spirits.
Come on a Revitalise day to see how mindfulness could transform your working life.
