My Nanna died a few years ago. I was really close to her and I really miss her. The weather at this time of year always brings back to me the period when she was dying.
We had lots of cool crisp days with blue skys and sunshine.
In happier times I bought her this…
I remember getting it for her one Christmas and her being so pleased with it. I knew she wanted one and it was lovely that she really enjoyed it. She looked at it so regularly to see what the temperature was.
A few days ago I was at my mum’s and she asked me if I wanted it back. I had never really wanted it before, it wasn’t really my sort of thing. However, because it reminds me of Nanna it seems to have become my sort of thing!
I have it on my desk now whilst I am working and it is really lovely to have something that reminds me of Nanna with me during the day. Although it has memories attached to it, it struck me what a mindfully useful object it is.
Every now and then I catch one of the coloured glass containers inside moving up or down and each time I do it completely grounds me in the moment. I look at the temperature and that reminds me to check how I feel.
Having something that reminds you to check in and see how your body is feeling is such a good way to be mindful. It could be anything. A reminder on your phone, a post it note, a bracelet that you move on your wrist at certain times of the day. There are all sorts of things that will work.
Each time you are reminded to check in with yourself do a quick scan down through your body. Start with the head, shoulder and arms and then go down through your torso, through your legs and into your feet. With each out breath feel your body relax a little more. If you manage to do this a few times during your day it will make so much difference to how you feel. Just making room for a little breather every now and then will leave you feel much more energised at the end of the day, you really will notice the difference.
For a more extreme energy boost come on a Revitalise Day. The opportunity to take a day out just for you will make a massive difference to how you feel and how you approach life.
