Today I was talking to my friend Anna about chill out time. We were discussing relaxation and what a skill it is.
I was recalling a Body Balance class that I used to go to on a Sunday morning. At least three quarters of the class would leave before the relaxation at the end of the class. It almost seemed as though they thought they were getting ahead by leaving 5 minutes early.
I looked forward to that chance for a chill out SO much. In the days when I had a new baby it was a little treat in my week.
The trouble is that most of us are busy all of the time. The chance to lie on the floor and do nothing doesn’t crop up very often. When it does most of us are ill equipped to cope with it. What do we DO? What if we are no good at it?
On a theoretical level we probably all know that we need to relax every now and then. Having this incentive in mind can create pressure. The harder we try the less relaxed we are, so what’s the solution?
If you can’t settle to a simple relaxation then Mindfulness Meditation could be just right for you. Through simple exercises you can train your body and mind to do less. To settle and calm down.
Think of a clear pool of water. Lots of pebbles are being thrown in muddying the water. We know, however, if we sit and wait the water will clear again. It is just the same with your mind. If you sit still then the thoughts in your head will start to settle.
Some simple techniques to help you to keep yourself still for longer could be all you need to set you on your way to a better relationship with relaxation.
