One of the things I love most about Mindfulness exercises is the way that we can train our brain to be more effective at the same time as cultivating more relaxation.
I am a totally busy person. My mind is always on the go. I am always on the go. So sitting to Meditate is a challenge. But as well as being a challenge it suits my needs perfectly.
By just taking a few minutes every day to stop and to focus on myself I create so much calm. The fact that I am training my brain at the same time helps the productive and busy part of me. It allows me in may ways to justify the time I spend sitting.
Some would say that we shouldn’t have to justify sitting and Meditating to ourselves. We shouldn’t think of it as being LAZY – but sitting and doing nothing? Can you rest easy with that?! Don’t you have jobs you should be doing?
From a common sense point of view we should know that looking after our own well being is the most important thing. We need to look after ourselves to be able to function properly and to look out for others. We need to train our brains to get the most out of every situation.
But if knowing that you are improving yourself by making your brain more effective is a thought that helps you then use it!
The most simple way to achieve relaxation and brain training at the same time is to commit to focussing on something for a set period of time.
Your breath is the most convenient focus because you always have it with you.
So set the timer on your phone, try 5 minutes.
Tune into the rising and falling of your breath.
Each time your mind wanders from the breath gently bring it back.
Do this as often as you can and you will feel the drastic benefits that brain training and more relaxation bring to your life.
