This morning Noah, my 4 year old, woke with a plan in his mind! He wanted to go on the Prestwold Estate for a picnic on the horses.
I often talk about going riding at Prestwold because I go on my own or with friends and we gallop for miles. Taking Noah was a whole different challenge!
Recently Noah has been riding every day, morning and evening if given half the chance. So he is getting better and better. He can trot for a few miles at a time now and so I decided that perhaps he was ready for the next step.
So we packed a breakfast picnic and set off. Everything went perfectly, no trouble, no difficulties. We couldn’t have had a nicer start to the day.
As Noah’s mum I do feel the responsibility of allowing him to ride. Obviously it is a risky sport. The trouble is he knows how much I love it and so he loves it too.
There were times on our ride when anxiety crept into my mind and impacted on the enjoyment. The horses are used to galloping the tracks so asking them to go steadily was a bit of a test for them.
When I felt the anxiety creep in I knew that I needed to keep myself really calm so that Noah and the horses didn’t start to get wound up. My favourite way of doing this is to sing a song. When you sing you breathe properly and when you breathe properly your body relaxes.
Horses pick up on your body position and on any tension instantly. As soon as we started to sing they chilled out too.
If there is an activity that you do that pushes your nerves then try this little trick. You will amazed at the difference it makes.
