The morning after the night before can be a challenge. If you have a heavy head, feel a bit worn out and a bit rough then try this revitalising recovery plan.
1)If you are tried but unable to sleep keep your eyes shut and really try to focus on your breath. Whether you are lying in bed or whether you have got up this really will allow you to get some well needed rest. Simply get comfortable and watch your breathing, you are an observer, don’t interfere, just give your breath your attention. Each time your mind wanders to a worry or a plan or to a bodily ache or pain simply bring your attention back to the breath. This may happen time and time again but you know what to do, simply return your attention and carry on.
2) Sit up and have a mindful drink. When we have been up late, drinking alcohol, feeling poorly or all three we are usually left dehydrated. Make yourself a drink, water, tea coffee, whatever you fancy. Sit up straight in a comfortable place. My favourite is cross legged on the sofa with a cushion to keep my back straight so I don’t have to put too much effort in. Once you are comfortable give your drink all of your attention. Smell it, feel the temperature of it. When you are ready take a sip and feel the liquid in your mouth. Feel the taste soak into your taste buds and slowly swallow. Repeat until you have finished your drink.
3)If and when you are feeling up to it put your trainers on and go for a short walk. Just a few minutes will make a massive difference. When you go outside really take time to notice the cool air on your face. The lovely fresh air in your lungs as you breath in. Appreciate the strength in your legs.
4) Be kind to yourself. It is so easy to beat ourselves up when we think we have overdone it and when we are frustrated with not feeling good. There really is no point, it just makes you feel worse. Just take these simple steps to look after yourself again and be pleased that you are back on track. If your mind wanders to regret or worry simply bring your attention back to the recovery plan.
