Last week I saw my friend who is expecting. She looked really well, she totally had the whole pregnancy glow! She was telling me though that her back was starting to ache and that she was starting to get uncomfortable. It made me remember the less glamorous parts of being pregnant.
It took me back to my pregnancy and the pains I used to get around my rib cage. It used to feel as though Noah was digging his feet right in. Sometimes the sensations were so strong it was difficult to put up with.
Obviously if you are experiencing pain and it is worrying you then your first job is to get checked out by a doctor. If all is well and you are suffering with pregnancy pains then keep reading!
It is completely natural to resist painful sensations but resistance often leads to yet more tension in our body.If you can learn to relax and stop resisting then you really can reduce the pain that you experience.
Scientific studies have gone as far as to demonstrate that mindfulness is better than morphine for pain relief. Bearing in mind your impending due date, mindfulness is definitely worth learning about!
Getting to grips with some simple exercise which allow you to chose where you focus your attention is great for pain relief. Sometimes rather than trying to think of something else and fighting away the feelings of pain it can actually be better to focus on the sensation that is causing the pain. This might sound counter intuative but it really does work, give it a go.
Next time something starts hurting in your body try putting all of your attention on the sensation. Be really interested in it. Explore it, try to work it out. See how it changes and develops. Before you know it your mind will have wandered to something else. Perfect.
