Today I had a hospital appointment. I was really organised and had a pocket full of change ready for the parking ticket machine.
Unfortunately in my hurry to buy the parking ticket I only put enough for one hour in the machine before I pressed the green button for the ticket….arrgh!
For a moment I was super annoyed with myself but I got on and bought another ticket and paid out a few more pounds.
Then as I held 2 parking tickets in my hand I had a flash of inspiration. I could give the first one away!
So I ran to the other parking machine where there was a queue and offered the spare ticket to the lady waiting to pay. She was initially suspicious and then when she realised I was being nice she gratefully accepted. She offered to pay me for the ticket and I reassured her that it was fine and that giving it to her felt much better than throwing it away!
It really did feel so much better. As I walked back to my car I had a smile on my face- a smile well worth the £1.50 that the mistake ticket cost me!
So next time you slip up don’t jump into beating yourself up – instead think of your options. Could your mistake give another person good fortune? Sometimes taking a moment to think of the good you could do makes all the difference to how you feel.
