Over the last few weeks I have been experiencing a pain in my right shoulder. I’m not sure if it comes from work and repetitive strain when using the mouse, from riding, swimming or dog walking!
Pain is all about perception. Research shows that if you meditate regularly your perception of pain changes. By Meditating the intensity with which we feel pain is reduced.
We tend to relax when we Meditate and relaxation certainly reduces the intensity of pain. The more we tense the more we feel it.
So the ache in my shoulder has not gone because I meditate but I am experiencing it in a different way. I have the skills to relax the area. With relaxation comes relief.
When it bothers me in bed I use the Total Focus technique. Rather than trying to ignore the pain I put all my attention on it. I rest my attention on the pain. By getting close to the sensation and actually seeking to explore the sensation the pain actually eases.
So if you have a pain in your body try making it the focus of your Meditation. Each time your mind wanders take your attention back to it.
