This morning I realised that I was feeling a bit flat. When I sit to meditate I always allow my mind a couple of minutes just to do its own thing and I then reflect on where my thoughts went.
I noticed that I was worrying about the things I hadn’t managed to fit in.
My thoughts went like this…
I didn’t finish that piece of work yesterday…
I haven’t filled my time sheet in for a few days…
I really need to get to the shops. How am I going to fit that in…
I didn’t ride yesterday…
The house is a bit of a mess and we have a friend coming to stay…
Actually nothing is really wrong.
I can finish the work today – no problem.
I have all my times recorded to do my timesheet and I can do that today – no problem.
The shops can wait, really we have plenty in – no problem.
The horses will have enjoyed a day off – no problem.
The house is pretty much sorted after a quick wiz round whilst Noah ate his breakfast – no problem.
So it got me thinking about the perspective we take.
The lilies we have at home at the moment reminded me of an exercise that I once did on a meditation retreat. We were each given a rose and given a few minutes to study it. Then we had to reflect on what we thought of it. We all said it was beautiful, amazing colours, lovely smell etc. Then it was pointed out to us that actually it had lots of imperfections, discoloured bits and areas where it was damaged. Hadn’t we noticed this?
The point of the exercise was to help us to realise that we really are our own worst critics. We see all the negatives about ourselves much more than other people do. Others look at us and see the best in us and see how well we do.
If we can just learn to be a bit more positive about ourselves it works wonders. We feel better so we relax, we are more confident so we look better and we enjoy life more.
So I decided to do a ‘best bits’ list for myself…
I have been looking after 2 horses and 1 small boy this week and they are all happy.
I went to yoga last night and loved it.
I have had some good nights sleep.
I have managed a couple of runs this week.
I have been meditating regularly.
I have worked hard whilst at work.
I have had lots of lovely time with Noah.
Yesterday after work I made a really nice meal for my parents and they enjoyed it.
Actually I realised I’ve done pretty well this week! As soon as I realised this life felt a little lighter and I was a bit nicer to myself.
So give it a try. Stop and write a few lists and see what a difference it makes to your approach.
Half the battle here was being aware of where my thoughts had gone and why I was feeling a bit flat. Once I had done that I knew how to handle it. Mindfulness is all about getting to know your mind, to get started on a more mindful way of life book on to a Revitalise Session.
