I absolutely love the fact that you can only think about one thing at once. I think it is such a useful thing to remember.
You may have lots of things going through your mind at any one time and it may seem SUPER hectic but you really can only think about one thing at a time. Give it a try right now – it just isn’t possible to think about two things exactly at the same time – you have to swap.
In terms of training your brain this comes in really handy. Each time your mind wanders away from the thing you really want to focus on you can correct it. Each time you correct it you are reprogramming your mind to focus as you ask. This is great because it improves your concentration capacity.
I was thinking today about how we can usefully train ourselves in terms of our daily behaviour too.
Doing one thing at once is a great way to be more mindful, more accurate and more effective. Although many of us pride ourselves on multitasking the outcome is never as good as when you give things your full attention.
A few examples…
Writing an email when you are watching TV is likely to result in mistakes – you might send it to the wrong person, you might forget to include something important, you may not notice spelling mistakes.
Eating a bag of crisps when walking through town is likely to reduce the enjoyment factor because your mind is torn away by the distractions that surround you. You might enjoy the first and the last crisp but you probably won’t really notice the rest!
Texting whilst driving – this can be a serious risk! Just like the email you may get things wrong but worse still it likely to result in an accident!
So taking one job at a time really helps us to keep our mind where it needs to be – on the task at hand!
Try to implement this new way of thinking from now on. One thing at a time. It keeps things simple and you do everything better!
You might even start to LOVE the happiness, reduced anxiety and clarity of mind that accompanies your new habit!
