Tomorrow I have my contact lens check. Wearing contact lenses can really seem quite a pain. They get bits stuck in them and make your eyes sore. Mine get very dry. Putting them in when you get up takes that extra bit of time. You can guarantee when you are most tired, and really ready to flop into bed. you loose one in the corner of your eye and have to spend ages trying to find it!
But having my check up appointment always makes me that bit more diligent with them. Rather than simply poping them out of my eye and into the solution in the case I actually take a decent amount of time to clean them. I remember being told when I first got them that you should spend 20 seconds rubbing each side of the lens in solution to clean any protein from them before you put them in the case.
Twenty seconds on each side of each lens seems like an eternity when you are desperate to go to bed! Actually the total of 80 seconds is ideal for a bit of mindfulness to chill you out and help you get to sleep.
So if you are a contact lens wearer then try this…
1) When you look in the mirror to take your lenses out smile at yourself for a moment first. A nice calm smile, be kind to yourself and remember the need to look after yourself and especially your eyes.
2) Take your lens out and put it in your palm. Squirt some of your cleaning solution onto the lens. Really notice the cool of the solution on your skin as you do this.
3) Use the palm of your finger on the lens and gently rub the lens for 20 seconds on each side. Make sure you really trek your time. Whilst you do this notice where you feel the breath in your body. The repetitive motion of the lens rubbing should fit in well with the steady rhythm of your breath.
4) Repeat with each lens and then pop them into the contact lens case. Take a few deep breaths and then smile at yourself in the mirror again. You have taken care of your eyes and your mind with this couple of minute break before bed. Be pleased with yourself.
