This morning I was running a Mindfulness session at a local school. The room that I was allocated to run the session was part of the library. The lovely, helpful, librarian helped me to set up the room.
As we moved the tables and chairs about I could tell she was a ‘doer’ – fast and efficient. No messing about!
We had a chat about the Meditation sessions and I encouraged her to have a go. She told me that she wouldn’t be able to meditate. She said she couldn’t go for any sort of beauty treatment as she couldn’t enjoy sitting still in the quiet.
I commented on the fact that she was a librarian and that it was odd then that she didn’t like the quiet! She explained that the library silence was different, she loved that. I thought about this and realised that it is different – library quiet is a productive sort of quiet – targeted towards getting things done.
People with a busy mind often think that they can’t meditate. They say that too many thoughts go round their head.
As human beings we all have millions of thoughts all day long, this is normal. If you don’t sit to meditate then this can be quite a shock when you try it. This really shouldn’t put you off.
If you are a productive person then your thoughts are likely to repeatedly take you to jobs that you could or should be doing. This can be difficult.
In terms of meditation then, productivity is a double edged sword.
The want to be productive may make it difficult for you to sit to meditate. Your thoughts may constantly sweep you away into planning and take your focus to jobs that need to be done. These thoughts can be really quite compelling and you can become convinced that the right course of action is to leave the meditation and to get on with the jobs.
However, if you practise and learn to settle into a meditation then things change. By doing the meditation and then moving on to your jobs you will see your productivity levels go through the roof. As a practical ‘doer’ this has to be an attractive opportunity!
When you allow your mind to clear you create the capacity to see things clearly and to act with precision and confidence. This way you waste very little time and make fewer mistakes. Everything seems quicker and easier.
So if your mind runs away with you when you try to meditate don’t give up. Stick at it because your efforts will reap rewards!
Come on a Revitalise Session to improve your ability to be mindful and to increase your productivity.
