Last weekend my friend text me to ask whether I could water some pot plants for her. She had gone out all day, forgotten to do it, and then the sun came out.
As the weather was so beautiful it seemed no trouble at all to water the plants, it was lovely to have an excuse to be out in the sunshine.
As I set about the job I was totally present in the moment. I admired the beauty of the garden. I enjoyed the fact that I had time to stand still and enjoy my surroundings. I didn’t rush, I did the job slowly and enjoyed every minute.
When I walked home again I felt like I had been on a mini break! Just a short amount of time in a different environment doing a different sort of job felt so refreshing.
Mindfulness isn’t all about sitting to meditate. It is amazing to try and fit some small periods of mindful living into your day too.
By slowing things down, enjoying the present and appreciating your surroundings you really can create calm and relaxation whilst you are on on the go.
Absolutely anything can be done Mindfully, from watering plants to washing the car. Try making more mindful moments in your day and see how much better you feel. Here’s how.
1) View the task afresh, as though every part of it is a new experience.
2) Be interested in each part of the experience.
3) Slow it down. Take a little more time than you usually would and life will seem a bit more interesting and you will get more out of it.
4) Each time your mind wanders from the task, and the moment, simply divert your attention back – this way you are training your brain at the same time!
