This morning I did one of my favourite meditations. It is all about remembering to release.
I woke up with a busy mind, It felt tight and it was suddenly focussed on all that I needed to get done…Noah to preschool, horses to be fed, car back from the garage, work to be done.
Before I had even woken up properly my mind was on the go, hectic, hectic, hectic.
So rather than spending a few more minutes lying there consumed by these thoughts I got up and did my meditation. Always a good move but not always the most obvious.
I knew which exercise would be my fix and I loved it when I did it. Sure enough it put me in a happy, productive and positive frame of mind and it lasted all day. Everything became easy and enjoyable.
Having sorted Noah out and done the horses I managed to find time for run before I did the car from the garage bit. It was a beautiful morning and it inspired me to try the same mindful exercise on the move.
Like many meditations it adapted really well to being done on the run. I was running laps of the cricket field with a grin on my face. So if you fancy a mood boost here is the exercise that will give it to you…
Settle yourself into an upright position with a focus on your breath or settle into a steady rhythm with your running / exercise with a focus on the rhythm of your stride.
Each time your mind wanders to a negative though / feeling / emotion then say to yourself ‘release’.
Each time you noticed a positive thought / feeling / emotion then note it with a one word label -e.g.. sunshine – warmth – fresh – joy – beauty – happiness.
Our brains have a negative bias, we naturally take more notice of bad news, upsetting comments, difficult emotions and unpleasant sensations. It is just the way we are wired.
The great thing is we don’t have to put up with it! This exercise allows you to change the balance so that you pay more attention to the positives.
By getting to know your mind through mindfulness and by learning to work with it you can encourage more positive thoughts and reduce the impact of the negative ones. Totally amazing and a great way to improve how you start every day.
