My Nephew just loves Minecraft. He came round tonight and spent a good couple of hours building me a vila with two pools on there.
He has lots of other hobbies. He is mad on football and trains with a local team twice a week. Today he has been to a local play scheme. He goes to gymnastics and is always on the go. So the odd session on the iPad to be a bit creative does him no harm at all.
The other great benefit is that playing on the game takes his mind away from his other worries. I asked him what else was worrying him at the moment. Today he was worrying about being burgled. He had been reading a Secret Seven story where there had been one and it was playing on his mind, that was until he turned his attention to something else.
We have done some meditation together and this works well for him too. He is so grown up for an 8 year old. He already recognises that minecraft is good in the daytime but before bed a meditation works much better and helps him get to sleep.
So we could all learn a little mindfulness from my nephew. Get a hobby that consumes you and learn some techniques to give your mind a break too.
