This morning I went for a lovely early morning ride with my friend Sylvia. The ground was covered in frost and we galloped along side each other across the beautiful white fields! Our eyes were streaming as we charged along! Quite an adrenalin rush for a Monday morning!
We each have two horses and this morning we decided to take the grey mares! So I rode Ladybird and Sylvia was on Glora.
Our mares are amazingly similar. On the one hand very responsive but on the other absolute nutters who love to gallop as fast as they can, no matter what we think! They are both so competitive that they can’t stand the other being in front.
So although they are both lovely rides, they are not for the faint hearted! You need some guts.
Post gallops we plodded back on the road chatting and Sylvia was telling me about her riding instructor who runs courses that are about riding with your mind. I was really interested as it sounded like it was based on mindfulness.
As we headed for home Sylvia told me to try deep breathing. It truly was amazing, as I focussed on deep breaths I felt my legs relax and my bottom sink deeper into the saddle. As I did so ladybird slowed slightly and her ears flicked back to tell me she was listening for what I wanted to do next, she instantly picked up on the change in me.
It got me thinking about what an impact our state of mind has on everything we do. I know that when I have done a meditation and I am in a calm and focussed state of mind I achieve so much more and life seems easier, lighter and less of a challenge.
Just as your horse picks up on your relaxed state of mind so do other human beings, they too will start to look to you for reassurance and guidance. It really is amazing.
The best thing is that by using your breath you can create the feeling of relaxation. With each out breath your body sinks a little deeper. This will signal to those around you that you are calm and confident and this leads others to trust you.
So for success in the saddle, and success in life more generally, mindfulness really is the way forward.
If you fancy giving it a go book a Revitalise Session to see how it could help you to make great progress.
