This morning Noah got up and told me that he didn’t want to go to his swimming lessons any more. I asked why and he said he didn’t want to go underwater and he didn’t want to do a star float. 2 of the things they always do in the lesson.
I told him that I would ask the teacher not to do these things with him today. So I did. She said that was no problem, they would just have some fun.
Then he got in the pool and because it was fun he went on and did everything he had asked not to do, very happily! I think the thought of doing it must have been worse than the reality!
I also think all pressure had been removed because I had asked that he shouldn’t do them. So when there was no expectation he was game for a go.
I think this really reflects how we all feel from time to time. When we are under pressure we can become resistant to performing. As soon as the pressure eases we who our true colours – we give it our best!
If you feel that you are a bit smothered by expectations why not release that somehow. Get rid of the expectation and then you really will flourish!
Mindfulness can help you in your quest to release some pressure. By learning to focus on the present the element of expectation is removed. Book a Mindfulness session to see how it could work for you.
