Driving down to Cornwall for our half term break got me thinking about the different attitudes people have to long journeys.
When I suggested a holiday in Cornwall Martyn could not think of anything except the long drive to get here. It totally put him off. My Dad was exactly the same. My mum and I could not have felt more different.
Once we hit the road I was full of excitement. I was present in the moment eager to start our holiday right then and there. I see absolutely no need to wait to arrive to get in the holiday spirit!
I enjoy mum getting out the flask of tea and pouring a cup whilst we go. I enjoy calling in at the service station and buying a treat from M&S. I love it when it is snack time. Mum, Noah and I sing and chat as we go along. What is there not to enjoy!?
The journey is part of the holiday for me. It is the start of the adventure. The start of moving forward. Moving forward always creates interest, the trouble is that often we get lost in thought rather than being present to witness it.
Mindfulness is about living in the moment. If you can be present in the moment as you pack your bags, as you load up the car, as you drive away, you can enjoy every element of the getting there.
Rather than seeing the journey as something to get over and done with try taking it moment by moment. When you do this you will soon realise that you are enjoying yourself even though you are still on the move!
Come on a Revitalise Day to learn more about living in the moment. See how mindfulness is possible no matter what is going on in your life. A few simple skills will set you up to live life to the full. Coming on a Revitalise day will show you how.
