Tonight my sister invited us round for a glass of wine and a few fireworks. David, my brother in law had been to buy just a handful of big fireworks rather than lots of small ones.
Noah and his youngest cousin went inside and watched through the window because they weren’t keen on the loud bangs! We all stood and watched and really enjoyed the moment. The night was still, we were all in good spirits, and the display was short but exciting!
It got me thinking about why we all seem to love fireworks, whatever our age. On the one hand they would seem to be a complete waste of money. They cost a lot, they can be dangerous, they take a bit or preparation and they are over in seconds. I jokingly said it was a bit like heroin. A few good ones and we were left wanting more. Wanting a bigger and better bang! Another fix.
The thing is, even though you can see the downside to fireworks they really bring you into the moment. I think that is why we all love them, they make us mindful.
In that moment where they bang you can not help but be snapped out of any thoughts that were whizzing round your head. Your attention is there with the explosion of amazing colours, all other thoughts leave your mind if only for a few seconds.
Being present in the moment is a sure way to be happier in life. Rather than worrying about the past or planning the future you can make the most of what is going on rather than letting it pass you by in a haze.
Of course fireworks are just one way to be mindful. Mindfulness practise through meditation is free, safe, takes very little preparation and the effect lasts if you keep repeating it! Come on a Revitalise Day to see how you could learn to love living mindfully.
