Mindfulness is an amazing tool when you are pregnant. Whether you are sailing through the experience or whether it is a hard slog mindfulness is just what you need.
When I was pregnant I was really lucky. I didn’t have a lot of sickness and generally I felt better than normal. Because I felt so good I thought that I didn’t need any relaxation. I carried on with life as though I wasn’t pregnant. I worked full time, I ran marathons, I looked after my horses. There was no taking it easy for me!
I still am very much a believer that pregnancy is not an illness but I have learnt to respect my body a lot more since having had Noah. Your body does something really amazing when it grows another human being and I look back now and think that actually it would have been a great addition to my life to have introduced mindfulness at that time.
Because I was feeling physically great I didn’t really allow myself any time to adjust, mentally of physically. Just a few moments of mindful meditation a day would have made a great difference to me and the way I dealt with the birth. Now that I meditate every day I can see what a brilliant difference it makes in terms of reducing worrying and increasing enjoyment.
Looking back on the experience of pregnancy I would say I enjoyed it but at the time I really hid my bump and was really self conscious about buying baby things from the shops. I was almost trying to hide the whole thing just in case anything went wrong. I am sure if I had been mindful I would have had a more balanced approach to the experience and I would have enjoyed it more.
For those who don’t have such feel good pregnancies Mindfulness is worth so much. If you are having a day where you are feeling nauseous and tired or you are run down then taking some time to rest your body and mind can do wonders for your health. Meditating daily has been shown to provide a boost to your immune system.
For me one of the first signs I am not feeling on top form is that my glands come up under my neck. I quite often feel amazed when I finish my meditation and they have gone down. A real sign that it does work.
So however you feel during your pregnancy keep up the meditation and it will keep you feeling strong and balanced. Come on a Revitalise Day to get to grips with mindfulness and meditation and to get a first hand experience of how great it can make you feel.
