Today I took my old boy Dexter out for a good gallop. When we set off he was ploddy and slow and he seemed a bit fed up. I took my time with him and was gentle, I didn’t nag him to go faster. When we got to the fields his spirit came back and he was excited and pleased to be out. Then he soon sped up and we had a brilliant time together!
When we arrived back at the stables I gave him a feed, got him cozy in his rug and he was a much happier horse than before we had been out.
Winter is a difficult time of year, not just for horses but for all of us.
We can feel restricted in what we do when everywhere is cold and wet. Night time comes so quickly and the hours of daylight are so short. For lots of people this can contribute to a low mood.
If you are suffering from feeling low then turning your attention to being kind to others could be just the tonic.
Somehow when we start to think of others we seem to be more capable of kindness than we are when we think of ourselves.
Most of us get frustrated with ourselves but have the ability to offer more compassion and understanding to those that we care about.
I know taking Dexter out, giving him some fun and then getting him settled again in a happier state did me a lot of good. I felt content and as though I had achieved something. I felt good because I had done some good.
It can be easy to mistake other people’s low mood. We might think they are being grumpy with us. We might think that they don’t want our company. Perhaps consider whether they need some cheering up, some of your attention.
If you spot someone who is a bit down in the dumps why not take them out and brighten up their day? If might be a trip to a coffee shop, a walk somewhere, meeting for a drink in a pub. It could be anything.
Just by giving someone else some time you could make such a difference to their outlook. Simple kindness can make such a difference. You will be amazed at your own positivity too, once you have done something to help another.
Come on a Revitalise Day to see how you can foster feelings of kindness in meditation. There are exercises that help you to develop particular feelings and they can make a huge difference to your mental well being.
