Do you feel like your brain could do with a boost?
Well the good news is that our brains are just like our bodies. If we feed them well and give them regular exercise then we improve the way they function. Just like any of the muscles in our body we can train them to become stronger and to be able to work for longer.
Eating fish has long been known to boost the development of our brains and to keep us healthy but here are a 3 less obvious dietary additions that might get you thinking…
1) Pumpkin Seeds -Just a handful of pumpkin seeds a day is all you need to get your recommended daily amount of zinc. Zinc is essential for enhancing thinking skills and improving our memory. So add some to your cereal in the morning, your salad at lunch time, pop a handful in your baking or simply use them to snack on.
2) Broccoli – Add more broccoli to your diet and you will get more vitamin K. Vitamin K enhances cognitive function and improves brainpower, so start today!
3) Blueberries – Research has shown that the consumption of blueberries may be effective in improving or delaying short term memory loss – so remember to pick some up next time you are out shopping.
Taking the active step of adding some brain enhancing foods to your diet will get you in a positive frame of mind. Whilst you are feeling committed to taking control of your health try adding a short meditation to your eating routine.
Make a pledge with yourself that before you begin to eat anything you will sit still for 30 seconds and notice your breathing. This will make such a difference to how much you appreciate your food. More often than not we mindlessly tuck into our next meal or snack without pausing to appreciate it. Just taking a few seconds to pause before you start really will make all the difference to what you get out of it.
Taking a little extra time over our food helps digestion and also helps to prevent over eating. If you are prone to eating too much this could be the perfect tip to get you on the right track for healthy weight management. You might find after 30 seconds of reflection you make the decision that you don’t need that chocolate bar that you were planning on!
