Mindfulness – Closer Families

1st January 2016 by Alex Leave a Comment

Some people dread family parties. We can all think of occasions where we have been compelled to go to a get together but when we really didn’t feel like it. Conversation can be difficult and people can feel awkward. However, it doesn’t have to be that way! Mindfulness can help.

Today we had a really lovely family New Years Day get together in a local cafe.

New Years Day

In the past we have usually had our new year meet ups at one of the family houses but this year we decided to try something different. We booked a big table for the family at local cafe bar and met for food and drinks. It was such a good idea.

Often when we entertain at home we spend the time consumed by making sure everyone has food and drink. When our mind is occupied by sorting out refreshments it can leave little room for relaxation or meaningful conversation. By taking that pressure away everyone was able to enjoy themselves to the full, no one was distracted by hosting. People had the time to be genuinely interested each other and what they had been doing.

When a large group of people get together it is completely normal for them to have different wants and desires. Keeping everyone happy can sometimes seem impossible and it can create stress when we try to do so. Meeting in this way meant it was really flexible. Some people ate and some people didn’t. Some people had cake, some people had lunch, it was so easy. No one felt any pressure, there was no norm to conform to. Everyone was happy.

When we meet up as families it can be easy to feel pressure to arrive at a certain time and to stay for a set period. Pressure, even if self imposed, can build resistance and a desire to break free. Because we were in a cafe everyone was comfortable to come and go as they pleased. Because no one felt any pressure to stay for any length of time we all actually seemed to hang around for longer chatting and genuinly enjoying each others company.

If you struggle to enjoy family parties then try something new. Meeting somewhere you all feel comfortable makes such a difference. When we are relaxed we definitely communicate more effectively. Better communication leads to better relationships.

Come on a Revitalise Day to get more ideas for mindful living and improve your ability to relax at the same time. The day is held in a beautiful and peaceful location. After a day of mindfulness and amazing healthy food you will leave inspired to make your way of living more mindful.
