Yesterday I was talking to my friend who is newly pregnant. She said that her bump was just getting to the stage where she could no longer do her jeans up easily, she was making the move to maternity wear. During pregnancy our changing body is a constant reminder of the birth getting closer. Your tunny gets bigger and the whole thing starts to feel more real.
It got me thinking about my pregnancy and how little time I spent connecting with baby at that stage. I didn’t make any special time for my baby before he was born. It wasn’t because I didn’t want to it was just that I didn’t appreciate what a difference it would make. Once he came along he certainly demanded my attention and things had to change! I loved it when it did. I have really fond memories of the endless time I sat feeding him and cuddling him.
New mums have lots of worries. One of the most common is that they won’t feel an instant connection with their baby the first time they meet them. This can seem to be something that we can feel powerless over and therefore the fear is multiplied. The news that mindfulness can help to prepare you for the moment you meet your baby is often a real relief. It is a solution, there is something you can do.
Pregnancy is the perfect time to start bonding with your baby. There is no need to wait until they are born. You are together 24 hours a day 7 days a week for 40 weeks. At that stage you don’t have to share your baby with anyone, they are all yours! A regular meditation routine at this stage can help to start the bonding process.
By spending 20 minutes a day quietly focusing on your baby during a meditation session you can build up a real connection. By spending this time creating a calm and peaceful environment for the baby you are already taking active steps to give it the best possible start in life. By focusing your thoughts on the well being of the baby you really can make a close bond between you before you even set eyes on each other.
A revitalise day is a great way to get yourself ready to enter into a meditation routine. The day will be a real oasis in your pregnancy, the perfect opportunity to look after yourself and to commit to enjoying the experience to the full.
