Today I took my lovely old horse Dexter out for a special boxing day treat. We both dressed up and went for a mad gallop around the Prestwold Estate. It was amazing, we loved it.
Dexter is 24 now, which is pretty old for a big horse, but he was like a spring chicken today. He was surrounded by other lively horses who were all excited about having a charge about. When I ride him in that situation mindfulness really helps me to keep my cool and to enjoy the experience rather than worrying my way through it.
It got me thinking about what a difference it makes to us when we are surrounded by other influences. If I take Dexter out on his own he plods along like the old man that he is. In company he changes completely to fit who ever he is with. The change really is dramatic.
I think so many of us experience this change in ourselves. When I am out with the girls for a few drinks I am lively and loud. When I am teaching mindfulness I am quiet and calm. When I am with my in-laws, like I was this afternoon, I am more sensible than when I am with my own family. All of us have so many different personas.
Having different ways of being with different people is completely natural and nothing to worry about. At times we all let our hair down. Recognising the different ways that we act is really important though. Not so that we can change it but so that we have better self awareness.
Mindfulness helps you to have better self awareness. Because you learn to be present in the moment you can recognise the way that you act in certain situations. The benefit of this is that you can act in the way that you want to. Rather than getting carried away and doing things that you regret you learn to respond to situations and act in a more appropriate manner. This doesn’t mean holding back, on the contrary it means entering into situations fully rather than letting them pass you by. Often this means much more fun.
Come on a Revitalise Day to see how you could be making more of life. Mindfulness really is a great way to get your new year off to a great start and to help you to do things that you thought weren’t possible.
