Today I was working on my computer and I had lots of applications open. My email, 5 or 6 different documents including photos and also my diary, and the internet. The screen looked too hectic and then the computer froze.
All of the applications being open at once was just too much for the computer to stand and it froze. The only remedy was to turn it off and back on again which was a bit frustrating as I was in the middle of things.
Looking back I knew that I should have recognised this was going to happen and I should have been closing them down as I went. The trouble was I was too consumed by what I was focusing on so I didn’t take the time to notice.
It struck me how this exact scenario can play out with our minds too. We get all consumed in the busy-ness of life and we forget to take the time to close things down mentally and to refresh.
If our brain has too many different things fighting for our attention then in just the same way as a computer we can experience the inability to work properly. To get back up to speed we just need to take a few minutes to close down the thoughts and to get a bit of clarity back.
Meditation is a great way to get your mind working back at full speed. Take just 5 minutes and set a timer on your phone.
Sit in a chair with your back straight so that you have the required attention.
Close your eyes to eliminate visual distraction.
Allow your mind to rest and see what thoughts arise.
When you notice a thought label it as a thought and then mentally say ‘release’ to yourself.
Do the same with each thought that arises until your mind feels a bit clearer.
When the timer goes off take your time to bring yourself back to the hear and now.
Appreciate the lovely feeling of still and calm before you return to whatever you were doing.
