Yesterday I was reading my new book – it is by Ruby Wax and it is all about her experiences of Mindfulness.
The part I was reading was about her children growing up and how when the child discovered that the pet hamster had died she was on her phone chatting.
She pretended to be interested but really she admitted that she was so engaged in the telephone conversation that she didn’t take on board the significance of the event that had taken place for her child in that moment despite being physically present.
She went on to say how she spent far too much of the time her children were growing up on the phone, and it struck me how true this is for so many of us.
Whether it is the phone or the computer it is SO easy to fail to give our family the attention that they deserve.
So when Noah came home from Pre School today I was on my computer and still working but I stopped what I was doing and made time to talk to him and most importantly to listen to him. This was a really Mindful moment and we both appreciated it.
I found out what he had eaten, how he was feeling and what he wanted to do. Once he was happy we both got on until I had finished my work.
Just having the presence of mind to stop and listen makes all the difference. We were both present in the moment and happier for it!
Come on a Revitalise Session to get more tips for being more Mindful. So often the small things make all the difference.
