It is that time of year again where we all start writing Christmas Cards. I have already received some lovely ones with really nice handwritten messages – just for me! They have made me smile when I have opened them and really did bring a little bit of happiness with them.
I have to confess that writing our cards is usually Martyn’s job. I do the Christmas shopping and he does the cards and posts them. He is obviously expecting it to be his job as he bought the stamps yesterday!
I was wondering whether to help this year. Everything in life can be done mindfully and I think Christmas card writing is no different. Usually slowing a task down is a fail safe way to be more mindful, you have time to think and to focus on what you are doing.
It is so easy to wiz through the task of writing cards with the sole aim of getting it done. Given that the card is intended to show that we care this doesn’t really fit.
So this year rather than making it a rushed job try slowing down and making each card personal. It doesn’t need to be a long message but just something that lets the other know that you really were thinking of them when you wrote the card.
When you slow tasks down you give yourself a bit more headspace and reduce your stress levels. Doing it when you are thoughtful of the recipient will make it so much more enjoyable.
So settle down with a drink and a box of cards and see if this works for you. Your friends and family will love the difference.
Come on a Revitalise Day to get inspired to make your whole world more mindful. You will be amazed at the difference it can make.
