This morning Noah and I took a big step. We went for our first ride out, just me and him with Dexter and Ladybird.
I have been building up to it for a while. Noah has been learning to ride since before he was born but up till now I have always walked or run with him so that I am on hand to help if he needs it. I have been taking ladybird out on the lead reign in the last few weeks so that she gets used to being so close to Dexter whilst we are out. She seemed to be happy coming along on the lead rope. This morning was about putting it all together. It was brilliant.
Noah loved it just as much as I did. He trotted confidently by my side and really enjoyed every moment. Taking my baby boy out to do something that is potentially so dangerous did get me thinking. There was a particular point in the ride when I realised I was thinking ‘what if?’. What if a big tractor came and frightened the horses? What if Noah fell off? What if something went wrong?
This was the point that mindfulness really made a difference to the experience. Rather than letting it ruin our ride and limiting my enjoyment I simply noticed it as a thought and then let it pass. I had done my preparation, I had done all that I could to make us safe and ready for the experience. Now the moment was here there was no use in predicting catastrophe and spending the time worrying.
Learning to enjoy all that we do in life and having the confidence to carry on when we are in tricky situations really can come from mindfulness training. Once you are able to notice your thoughts and make decisions about whether you act on them you put yourself in a position of control. You decide how things go rather than simply letting life happen to you.
