Yesterday Noah, Martyn and I went to an Easter party at our friend’s Claire and Martin’s house. There were lots of chocolate treats but Noah doesn’t eat chocolate. Instead they gave Noah a kite!
He was delighted and wanted to fly it straight away. The trouble was there was no wind.
When I got back form my ride this morning I shouted to tell Noah that the wind was back! We headed to the field and had a go.
The first few attempts were a flop. The wind kept dropping and we weren’t really sure how to do it. I said we would have one more go before breakfast and then, amazingly, it flew!
We were so excited by our success, we couldn’t believe it was flying high! We were grinning form ear to ear and making lots of high pitched whooping noises.
It was so much fun. It was the best and very mindful Easter present ever! Here’s why…
1) Getting the kite to fly took all of our focus for about half an hour. In that time our minds were totally focussed on what we were trying to achieve. We were completely present in the moment and enjoying every second of it.
2) Once the kite was up in the air Noah was so happy standing and holding it. He gazed up at the sky for ages. We are all prone to rushing around and very rarely stop to take in our environment. Standing still and having time for reflection is so important for all of us.
3) It helped us to express our emotions really freely. As the kite flew we squealed with amazement and delight. So rarely in life do we shout out loud somewhere we can feel completely uninhibited. Recognising our emotions is so important to our well being. Recognising emotions of joy and happiness has such a positive impact on our mood. By expressing and recognising positive emotions more often we can influence our own perception of happiness.
Mindfulness can be practised anywhere and no matter what you are doing. Sometimes a little inspiration is all you need.
