This morning I went for a swim at the local pool. I pushed myself to do more front crawl than I normally would – this is always a challenge for me. I have always found the whole breathing thing really quite difficult.
Afterwards I was thinking about learning from watching.
I have been taking Noah for swimming lessons over the past couple of months and from watching each week I think I have actually built my water confidence. I have been finding that I am calmer about breathing and having my head under water.
The more I have a go at staying under water the more at ease I get with it and the more I can relax and enjoy it.
This is such a striking similarity to Meditation.
To start with Meditation can feel uncomfortable, a real challenge. You have a go but you might be itching to get up and be busy again.
By repeating your attempts you gradually become more comfortable with Meditation. The more you do it the more you enjoy it when you do it. Just like having your head under water it becomes more natural.
So if you find it tough when you first have a go keep trying. Little and often is the way to make sure you enjoy it and stick with it. Soon it will be the most natural thing ever.
