Meditation is a challenge.
The challenge does not come from the exercise itself. Mindfulness meditations are not usually hard to understand. For the most part they are quite simple in nature.
The difficulty comes form our own mind. The huge number of thoughts that dart around our minds at super high speeds make focussing on one thing hard. No sooner have you noticed a thought than another comes to take over. The Buddhists call this ‘Monkey Mind’. The thoughts we experience are like monkeys swinging from tree to tree. Constantly lively and rarely still.
So the skill in meditation comes not from intelligence but from regular practise. Commitment is key. As with almost every skill in life the rule is little and often. The more often you sit and run through your mindful meditation the more used to it your mind will be. When your mind starts to recognise the exercise then it becomes easier to do.
Of course you will have days where you mind is more busy and these days will feel difficult. You will have days where you are tired and you may find it hard to keep yourself awake. The message has to be stick with it. The more you do the easier it will seem and the more you will love it.
