Yesterday afternoon my lovely niece came to help me with the horsey jobs. I picked her up on my way back from my ride so she got a little go on Dexter, my big horse, too. She was so delighted to have had a ride, it was a real unexpected treat, and she was eager to help afterwards which was lovely.
My sister is a teacher and is really amazing with her children. I learn so much from her in terms of good parenting. One recent stroke of genius from her has been to introduce two questions to their lives. 1) Is it kind? 2) Is it helpful.
Whenever her daughter has to make a decision about how she acts she asks these questions. The results are amazing!
The questions have spread and Noah, my little boy, has entered into it too. My sister and I have found the questions going through our minds repeatedly aswell. With the 4 of of us all asking these questions things have been really lovely.
Of course we love each other and we have lots of fun. There are times however when tensions can run high as the children wind each other up and we get cross trying to sort them out. Having these questions has given us the prompt to stop and think about our actions and as a result we have all behaved much better!
So as we were picking the horse poo yesterday we chatted away and we were talking about what a difference the questions were making. The most obvious difference was that whilst we were doing jobs together we were having a great time and being kind to each other at the same time. We both decided that we love these questions, we have noticed that when we are kind and helpful we really are happier.
So if you find parenting challenging at times perhaps try introducing these questions to your family. The impact is almost contagious, happiness really does spread.
