So many of us fall into the trap of thinking that a physical work out is all about getting out of breath. Certainly an aerobic work out is good for us and it can burn plenty of calories but thinking of other ways to strengthen and condition your body is great too.
Working to improve your balance is a great way to build core strength. In order to balance you need to switch on your core muscles. Core muscles play a vital part in good everyday movement. Strong core muscles will allow you to lift and move well and avoid injury.
If you try to balance on one leg and you don’t have your core engaged you will find yourself wobbling all over the place. In order to balance well you will need to focus on what you are doing.
Try standing on one leg and lifting the other knee up to hip height. Keep your eyes focussed on a particular point ahead of you and think about switching your core on. Practice this daily and you will really start to see an improvement in your ability.
By focussing on one point and by using all of your attention to complete the exercise you will also be giving your mind a work out. Each time your attention wanders from the exercise you will notice a wobble. Use this as your reminder to come back to the moment and to focus on what you were doing.
