This morning Noah and I went for an early ride. Noah is only 4 but he already loves an early morning outing on the horses as much as I do.
We just went for a gentle plod, nothing to challenging any of us, just pure enjoyment. Noah and I were relaxed, we chatted and sang as we went.
The horses were chilled out too, they happily pottered along side each other and they seemed to be enjoying the company.
Afterwards we were doing our jobs and the horses were keen to stay with us and to watch what we were up to. There was absolutely no rush to leave our sides. They wanted to be close to us.
It got me thinking about how the horses impact on my behaviour and vice versa.
If I go up to see them and ride following a meditation I always have a better ride. Always.
Perhaps this is not surprising. Anyone who knows animals knows that they respond best to you when you are calm and consistent with them.
Mindfulness meditation does just this for you. It allows you to enter into a calm state of mind and helps you to cope calmly with whatever situations arise.
When the horses are lovely and calm it reflects on me. Whatever comes up I handle it better. I can see clearly what will help and what will hinder.
So if they shy at something I reassure them rather than getting cross. If they are a bit too lively I breathe deeply and pass on my calm. It really does work.
So if you love the company of horses, or of any other animal try taking some time to your self before you spend time with them.
Try sitting quietly with your back straight.
Take a few deep breaths.
Spend a few minutes just noticing your breathing.
Notice how your thoughts settle and slow down as you relax.
When you approach your animal keep the calm, and keep an awareness of your breath. You will be more aware of how you are acting and when you see the impact you will love the difference.
Kindness and compassion is at the heart of Mindfulness. Passing this n to animals is SO rewarding. Come on a Revitalise Session to see how well it could work for you.
